A small Manchester practice that picks up the phone

Northern Books is a small accountancy practice in the Northern Quarter. We work with sole traders, freelancers, tradespeople, landlords and owner-managed limited companies who want their tax done properly without having to become experts themselves.

You deal with the same person every time, we explain things in plain English and we quote a fixed fee before we start. We use cloud software such as Xero and QuickBooks, so you can see your figures whenever you like, and we keep an eye on deadlines so HMRC and Companies House never catch you out.

How it works

  1. 1

    Free intro call

We talk for about 20 minutes about your business, what you need and what it is likely to cost. No obligation.

  2. 2

    Fixed quote and onboarding

You get a written fixed-fee quote. Once you accept, we collect your details, get authorised with HMRC and set up your software.

  3. 3

    We get on with it

We do the work, keep you posted on deadlines and send you a clear summary of what you owe and when.

Our fees

All fees are fixed and quoted before we start. Prices shown exclude VAT and are a guide: we confirm your exact fee after a free introductory call.

Questions we are often asked

When is the Self Assessment deadline?

For online returns the deadline is 31 January after the end of the tax year. The tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April. Paper returns are due earlier, on 31 October, so we always file online.

Do I need to register for VAT?

You must register once your taxable turnover passes the VAT threshold, and you can register earlier voluntarily. We will check your figures and explain the pros and cons, because voluntary registration is not right for everyone.

Should I set up a limited company?

It depends on your profits, your clients and how you want to take money out of the business. We will run the numbers for you before you decide. For some people staying a sole trader is simpler and cheaper.

I am behind with my bookkeeping. Can you help?

Yes. Send us what you have, even if it is a pile of receipts and bank statements, and we will tell you how long it will take and how much it will cost to catch up.

Not sure where to start?

Tell us a little about your business and we will call you back within one working day.
